MUNDELEIN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Authorities in Mundelein have launched a homicide investigation following the fatal shooting of a man Monday.
Chris Covelli with the Lake County Major Crime Task Force said officers arrived around 7:10 p.m. to the parking lot of a shopping center near Lake Street and Diamond Lake Road for a report of shots fired.
"Police officers arrived at the scene, however, didn't find a shooting victim…What they learned was the victim was transported by an acquaintance in a private vehicle to an area hospital,” Covelli told WBBM.
The 21-year-old victim from Wheeling died at the hospital, but Covelli said the person who drove him to the hospital left before officers arrived.
Covelli said the incident is being investigated as a homicide.
"Taskforce investigators and Mundelein investigators are working diligently to forward leads, try to figure out who was responsible, who was involved,” said Covelli. “They're reviewing video surveillance from businesses that were in this strip mall area as well as the video surveillance from the area hospital.”
It's not clear what the acquaintance's relationship is to the victim or what the circumstances were surrounding the shooting.
