CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A man died Wednesday morning in Harvey after a struggle with an Illinois State Police Trooper over a handgun.

According to Illinois State Police, troopers pulled over a car at 147th and Halsted at about 12:30 am.

The driver was out of the car and police said a passenger jumped into the driver’s seat and a handgun came out of his waistband.

“Struggle ensued to gain control over the firearm,” ISP said. “The firearm discharged and the subject was struck.”

ISP said the man was shot and later was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Police said the troopers involved were not struck and they did not discharge their weapons during the incident.

After the man was shot, police said the car rolled into a second state trooper who sustained minor injuries and the car then hit a bus stop shelter and came to rest on a sidewalk.

This incident is under investigation.
