(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – An inmate from the south suburbs was keeping busy while serving part of his sentence on home confinement, and now he’ll be spending more time in custody, federal prosecutors say.
Carlos Smith, 58, of Park Forest submitted fraudulent applications for government-backed loans in 2020 while he was under house arrest. Smith had been sentenced to 60 months for theft of government funds and aggravated identity theft.
In seeking pandemic-related business assistance, Smith lied on application forms and submitted fake tax documents. Smith received approximately $421,900 from two loans, prosecutors said.
Smith pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of money laundering in June. On Feb. 23, a federal judge sentenced him to four years in federal prison for re-offending while still serving the previous sentence.
