CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — South suburban residents with landline phones must start dialing area codes for even local calls starting Sunday.

Because the Federal Communications Commission has designated 988 as the number for the National Suicide Prevention and mental health crisis line, area codes that have 988 as a prefix must now use the full 10 digits for local calls.

In Illinois, that's 708 in the south suburbs, 309 in the western part of the state and 618 in the southern portion.

Cell phone calls already use the full 10 digits but landline calls and security alarms will need to be reprogrammed.
