(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A drag racer from Marengo was killed over the weekend at Great Lakes Dragaway in Kenosha County.

Chuck Weck was a member of a racing organization called the Chicago Wise Guys, formed nearly 30 years ago.

His friend, Steve Malek, said after the national anthem at the track, Weck told him to be safe. Malek recalled saying, “Thanks, Chuck, same to you.”

That’s the last time they spoke.

Police said Weck was going about 200 miles per hour in his custom Corvette when he slammed into a wall.

Malek spoke to CBS 58 Milwaukee.

“Just hearing the announcer announce, ‘Chuck Weck crashed into the wall, give us a minute guys,’ and seeing all of the medical emergency crews do everything they could to save him,” Malek said. “Pretty tough, I’m not gonna lie, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever seen.”

There are tributes on the Chicago Wise Guys Facebook page.

One says, “go race in peace.”

Chuck Weck was 66 years old.

His ashes will be scattered at the racetrack.
