Markham cop resigns after alleged COVID relief fraud, avoids jail time

MARKHAM (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Markham police officer has avoided prison for alleged fraud involving the pandemic-related Paycheck Protection Program. Two others are under investigation.

Rayshonda Lewis resigned from her $83,000-a-year job as a police officer and will do community service and probation under a deal reached with federal prosecutors.

She was alleged to have applied for a $20,000 loan claiming she owned a non-existent catering company.

Someone wearing a badge to take advantage of a program, that’s concerning,” Markham City Administrator Derrick Champion told CBS-2.

He added that the city welcomed her resignation.

Two other officers are alleged to have done the same thing.

One is alleged to have given the police department’s address for a non-existent landscaping company. He’s still on the job. The third officer transferred to another department.

They’re among many people under federal investigation for alleged PPP fraud.
