While face coverings are required at many locations because of the pandemic, polling places aren't among them, a west suburban official says.
Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham says he'd like all voters to wear masks. But he says he can't require them, because that would violate federal law.
Cunningham on Wednesday said it could be construed as a form of voter suppression to prevent someone from entering a polling place if they don't have a mask.
Cunningham is having election workers thank voters for wearing masks, as well as posting signs at polling places with the same message.
Free masks are also available at polling places.
Cunningham says those steps appear to be enough to get voters to wear them.
