Massive fire wipes out Roseland furniture store

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A furniture store in Roseland, on Chicago’s Far South Side, was destroyed in a fire Thursday night.

Bright orange flames burned through Elegant Furniture & Linen near 112th and Michigan. It’s a family-owned business of 13 years.

Owner Ahmad Zoubi said he smelled smoke in the basement at closing time at around 6 p.m, and, when he and his staff went to investigate, the fire tore through the store.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Brian Helmold said the fire challenged crews.

“Furniture stores are [a] notorious danger because of the flammable material that all the furniture [is] made of,” Helmold said. “We had a ton of mattresses stored in the basement.”

The fire spread to two other buildings. One firefighter made a mayday call when he became disoriented. The fire department said he was rescued and went to the hospital briefly in good condition.

No one else was injured.
