CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Mayor Brandon Johnson congratulated the latest recruits of the Chicago Police Department at Monday's Navy Pier graduation ceremony.
Mayor Johnson welcomed 261 new officers to the force, congratulating and thanking their families for supporting and "standing strong" beside them.
He said although it’s a big day for the graduates, it's also a big day for the wider community.
"It's also a remarkable day for our entire city because we are gaining public servants, public servants who are dedicated to building a stronger, safer Chicago."
He also stressed the importance of creating bonds with residents, especially those in underfunded communities.
"Our residents want to trust in the ability of law enforcement. Our residents want the high-fives of this department, to build a stronger and safer city."
In addition to the new officers, the ceremony also recognized newly promoted command staff, including sergeants, detectives, and field training officers.
