CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lori Lightfoot is showing some impatience with the time it is taking to investigate Congressman Bobby Rush's complaint that police officers lounged in his office while vandalism and looting were occurring across the city.
On June 1, Congressman Bobby Rush said while protests and looting were happening on Chicago streets, a group of police officers was in his South Side office relaxing and even making popcorn. The matter's being investigated.
Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara has suggested the officers had been asked or ordered to protect Rush's office. Rush says he didn't invite them, and Mayor Lightfoot scoffs at the FOP assertion.
"That narrative is false. It has been false since the moment he uttered it. The investigation is ongoing. As I am sure you are aware, there is also an evaluation being done by the State's Attorney's Office, so we need to make sure that we don't interfere with that; but we need to get that done. It's way past time," she said.
Lightfoot added: "This doesn't need to be hanging over those officers' heads, it doesn't need to be unresolved. I think Congressman Rush deserves to have some answers."
