CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Mayor Johnson insists that a new city government hiring freeze will not hurt public safety efforts.

Speaking to reporters after an unrelated event at Soldier Field Monday, the mayor was asked how the recently announced hiring freeze could affect Chicago Police staffing.

“The goal is that we don’t have to stop hiring at all, but, in terms of public safety positions that are related to community safety, [they] will be examined,” Johnson said.

The mayor’s administration has said the move aims to help close a budget deficit.

Johnson said another issue is massive payouts involving past Chicago Police misconduct cases.

“With Superintendent Snelling, I appointed him to be my superintendent because we have moved away from the brutality that we saw in ‘68 to constitutional policing. That’s what I promised, and that’s what we’re delivering them,” the mayor said.
