CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Mayor Lightfoot has appointed a new inspector general. Attorney Deborah Witzburg is officially the nominee who would replace the ousted Chicago Inspector General Joe Ferguson, Lightfoot's office officially announced Thursday morning.
After a deliberative process, the Mayor has selected the former deputy attorney general for a four-year term. Witzburg had quit as deputy- a position she had held since 2020- so that there would be no conflict during her application process for inspector general.
During her tenure as deputy, Whitzburg led the part of the IG Office that oversaw police reform and issued a number of critical reports about CPD and recommendations.
While she was the handpicked choice of Ferguson, with whom Mayor Lightfoot repeatedly clashed, the Mayor had words of praise for Witzburg.
"Deborah's years of relevant experience and deep commitment to being a public servant make her a great fit for this role and I am confident in her ability to lead this important office," said Lightfoot in a press release.
Witzburg will need to be confirmed by the City Council.
