(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson says he may have to start having some people removed from City Council Chambers if they keep disrupting the council meetings as they did Thursday.
A small, but loud cadre of people heckled speakers during part of the City Council meeting. Things got very loud, and insulting, during a tribute to Hispanic Heritage Month, as some of the disruptive audience members expressed anti-immigrant sentiments.
Johnson said he felt compelled to speak out and warned that future disruptions could end in ejections.
"I believe in open discussion, and some of the language that is coming across the other side, it's hurtful and it is disrespectful," he told reporters. "Today I made it very clear, if that's your form of expression, we're going to have to take the next step and remove those individuals."
Johnson said the hecklers who crossed the line are by no means representative of discourse at City Hall: "Some of the disruption that you heard today -- this is a super, super, super small portion of how the vast majority of the people engage today."
The last few City Council meetings have featured more than the usual disruptions, with someone within the crowd apparently taking video.
