CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Not only is President Biden expected to make a statement Tuesday about rising cases of COVID-19, so is Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
There were more than 12,000 cases of COVID-19 reported Monday in the State of Illinois - the highest number of daily cases reported for the entire year. The last time numbers were this high was last December.
Numbers are also going up in the City of Chicago, and on Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Lightfoot will be providing an update on where things are going, as we head towards the Christmas and New Year holidays. She was on MSNBC on Monday night, where she teased a major announcement.
"Look we have to step up our mitigation efforts. We will be making a major announcement tomorrow so I won't get ahead of that. But, we see what other cities have done with acquiring vaccination proof for places of leisure—bars, restaurants, gyms, and other places and we’ve got to take this seriously," Lightfoot said Monday night on MSNBC.
"We went from about 300 cases and a downward slope just three weeks ago, to now we’re over 1,000 cases a day and we’re seeing an increased number of deaths in our city, so the time is now to act and we will."
Among Cook County’s recommendations during the surge is that people who wish to celebrate the holidays with others be tested a couple of days before the event and the day of the event.
Statewide, hospital intensive care units are at 88 percent capacity.
