CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lightfoot suggests the city will not go easy on Alderman Tom Tunney, whose popular restaurant violated the COVID-19 ban on indoor dining.

Mayor Lightfoot said she’s deeply disappointed in her friend Tom Tunney. He admits that he allowed some longtime customers to dine inside his Ann Sather restaurant, in direct violation of state and city bans on serving drinks and food indoors.

The Mayor said people are watching to see if Tunney gets special treatment.

"I've heard from a number of restauranteurs about this issue, but the one thing they have consistently said to me throughout this very difficult year for them is to 'just be fair Mayor. Make sure that whatever the rules are that they are enforced uniformly. That there are no exceptions. And when people break those rules that they are held accountable,'" Lightfoot said.

"The alderman knows he did wrong. He will absolutely be held accountable - zero exceptions for that, but I understand the anger and frustration, because this has been such an incredibly hard year."

She said Tunney will be held accountable, but it will be up to the Department of Administrative Law to decide what penalties or fines Tunney will face.
