CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With his old union- the Chicago Teachers Union already backing him, Chicago Mayoral Candidate Brandon Johnson has lined up up another major labor union endorsement.
Union President Dian Palmer announced SEIU Local 73's endorsement for the Cook County Commissioner outside the Cook County building Wednesday.
"He understands the fight and he understands what it means to fight for Chicago," she said. "He understands what it means to fight for the working people."
SEIU Local 73 represents nearly 16,000 workers in Chicago, primarily in public service and publicly- funded positions in schools, universities, and social and city services.
Johnson, a former school teacher, said the fight is not over.
"For too long, the cries and the voices of working people have gone unheard and unnoticed, but let me make this very clear today," he said addressing the crowd.
"As the next mayor of the city of Chicago, the cries and the voices of working people will no longer be ignored."
Palmer said she talked with Congressman Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, who’s considering a mayoral bid, but Local 73 is solidly with Johnson.
