(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Chicago mayoral candidate Willie Wilson is making no apologies for saying police should be able to chase some criminal suspects and "hunt them down like a rabbit."

It was during a televised debate last week when Wilson said many police officers feel hampered by rules about when they can and cannot chase fleeing suspects.

Incumbent Mayor Lori Lightfoot condemned the remark. But Wilson, appearing on this week’s “At Issue,” said he’s serious.

“These crooks out here is killing people,” he said. “It should be more hard on them.”

Wilson emphasizes that his son was shot to death at the age of 20, so violent crime is an emotional subject for him.

While he stresses he is—in his words—pro-police, Wilson also says misconduct among police officers should not be tolerated.

He said he wants to hire more police and raise their salaries.

“At Issue” airs Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m.
