CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A round of heavy thunderstorms kicked off the Memorial Day weekend in the Chicago area, with an inclement weather threat set to linger for the rest of the afternoon.

An initial line of strong thunderstorms moved through the Chicago area earlier this afternoon, delivering heavy downpours in the western and south suburbs.

Additional thunderstorms could emerge later this afternoon and evening, AccuWeather says. These storms could produce damaging wind gusts, strong downpours and even hail.

As for the rest of the holiday weekend, it won’t be a complete washout. Tomorrow, AccuWeather forecasts pleasant conditions, with bountiful sunshine and comfortable temperatures, with highs in the mid 70s inland, and around 70 at the lakefront.

Sunday, though, could be wet. AccuWeather says showers and thunderstorms could hit throughout the day, some possibly severe.

For Memorial Day, AccuWeather predicts a cloudy day, with scattered showers.
