(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- People desperate to locate a loved one will get a chance later this month to expand their search when the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office hosts a Missing Persons Day.

It’s the fourth time the agency will hold the event but the first since the pandemic.

Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Ponni Arunkumar said participants don’t have to be a relative of a missing person, but the subject must have been missing for more than one month.

She encourages people to bring medical and dental records and photos or DNA samples that her office can use to look for matches among unidentified bodies there.

People can file formal missing persons reports at the event, which will have representatives from multiple law enforcement agencies.

Dr. Arunkumar says her office is the only one in the state to host such an event and they will share the information with local coroners.

About 100 people have come to each of the three prior Missing Persons Days, resulting in one match, she said.

Registration is not necessary for the free event, which runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 20 at the ME’s office.
