A space in Edgewater that has housed several different businesses over the years is now expected to be demolished.

“Right now, we have 10 lines that are operated by diesel locomotives pulling trailer cars. And then one line that’s electrified, the Metra Electric line. This is a single level train set powered by batteries.”

Metra purchased eight of the trains from Switzerland’s Stadler Rail Company.

They seat around 200 people and feature luggage racks, charging outlets, tables and folding trays.

After some testing in Colorado, Gillis says the goal is to debut the first set on the Beverly Branch of the Rock Island Line in 2028.

“They’re very flexible, very unique and we can’t wait to get them into service.”
