Metra Police have launched a new drone program aimed at getting eyes on scenes faster along the region's rail lines.
The pilot program, funded by a $620,000 federal grant, has deployed three drones at facilities on the Metra Electric Line and at the Western Avenue Coach Yard.
The drones are equipped with infrared and high-definition video capabilities and can cover a range of roughly three miles. Officers licensed as drone pilots control them remotely, allowing real-time visuals to be shared with first responders and partner agencies.
Metra says the program is designed to help police monitor rail lines and respond to incidents more quickly. The agency has already applied for additional funding to expand the program.
