College basketball player shot in native Joliet while back home for holiday break

JOLIET (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A member of the Michigan State University basketball team is recovering after he was shot while on holiday break in Joliet this weekend.

Freshman point guard Jeremy Fears was shot in the leg sometime late Friday or early Saturday morning at a residence in his hometown of Joliet, according to a statement from the university.

Joliet Police said they responded early Saturday morning near St. Jude and Capri for reports that two people had been shot.

Investigators believe the victims were inside a house when a suspect walked in and opened fire.

Fears was shot in the thigh and underwent surgery. A 19-year-old woman was also shot.

In a statement, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said he’s focused on supporting Fears in his road to recovery.

Police are still investigating the incident.
