(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Lake County Sheriff's Office says a middle school student may have prevented a school shooting in Mundelein.

The Sheriff's Office says there had been an altercation on a school bus between students from Fremont Middle School.

One was reported to have threatened a school shooting.

After arriving home, it is alleged, the student who made the threat initiated a video call with one of the other students involved in the altercation on the bus, and showed the student a shotgun.

That prompted a 911 call.

Deputies responded to the juvenile's home and seized the shotgun and another firearm.

"We are incredibly grateful to the witnesses who stepped forward to report this threat. The community plays a critical role in preventing tragedies. Across the country, we've seen too many instances of school violence where warning signs went unreported," Sheriff John Idleburg said in a press release.

The student was petitioned to juvenile court on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and aggravated assault.

Charges against the juvenile's guardians are pending.
