With frigid temps outside, migrants say Chicago police kicked them out of station

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Although the City of Chicago announced plans to move migrants into local churches starting Wednesday, some of those who had been staying at a Far South Side Chicago police station said they were asked to leave Tuesday night amid frigid temperatures.

Some of the asylum seekers — who had been staying at the Calumet District — were taken to a shelter.  Those who did not go, though, were told by a captain that they had to remove their belongings and could no longer sleep there, reported CBS 2.

Volunteer Jenny Leal said she found an apartment for four migrants to stay at the last minute.

"Our hearts break for them," Leal told the station. "They're out here in the cold. This shouldn't be — for anybody. We serve the homeless in Chicago, too."

Some of the migrants who spoke to the station said that while they were grateful to have been able to stay at the station so far, the way they were asked to leave — and stay in the cold — was inhumane.

Chicago Police News Affairs said the migrants were not kicked out of the station and were allowed to sleep there.

Seventeen local churches are slated to begin taking in migrants from police stations starting Wednesday.
