Minimum wage in Chicago rises to $15 an hour

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A lot of minimum wage workers in the City of Chicago are getting pay raises Thursday.

The minimum wage in the city rises to $15 dollars an hour Thursday, but not everyone will see that rate.

People who work in businesses that have four to 20 employees will see their wages rise 50 cents to $14 an hour, and that rate with rise to $15 an hour in two years, on July 1, 2023.

Youth workers will see their minimum wage rise to $11 per hour.

In large companies, the minimum wage for people who earn tips as part of their compensation goes up by 60 cents to $9 an hour.

Chicago’s minimum wage will now rise every July 1, based on the cost of living.

The state’s $10 per hour minimum wage is set to rise by $1 on Jan. 1, 2022, until it hits $15 per hour in 2025. Approximately 1.4 million Illinois residents earn the state’s minimum wage.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.
