A German shepherd that bolted from an Avondale veterinarian’s office and disappeared for several days in the cold and snow has returned home.
Toby, the 2 1/2-year-old German Shepherd, was safe and with his owner, Nelly Roa, on Wednesday afternoon after she received a tip on the skittish pooch’s whereabouts.
The dog was dropped off at the vet’s on Saturday because of an eye condition, but he managed to escape.
Roa and her family publicized the missing dog because of the extreme weather conditions Toby was likely enduring. On Wednesday, they got a solid tip he had been spotted in Humboldt Park.
“I saw him and I got down on my knees like the experts told me and I called his name, and he came to me,” Roa tells WBBM Newsradio.
Toby’s paws are not in the best shape but otherwise he seems OK, she says.
She credits friends, strangers, neighbors and Chicago police in getting Toby back.
“I have no words to really, really express my gratitude. If I could, I would hug and kiss each and every one of you guys.”
