(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The idea of a new White Sox ballpark on the southwest edge of The Loop has gotten the thumbs-up from Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, a published report says.
The new stadium would be part of a 62-acre riverfront development called "The 78” and would replace the current White Sox home, Guaranteed Rate Field in Bridgeport.
Manfred tells Crain's Chicago Business he supports the venture, which he says could be financed without any new taxes. Manfred said the proximity of the new ballpark to the city’s downtown would be a game-changer for the White Sox.
Also publicly on board with the plan are key labor officials and the 3rd ward alderwoman whose ward includes the ballpark site.
