OAK PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Churches in and around Chicago have been stepping in to assist migrants, including some in Oak Park.
In Oak Park, it started with Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, which took in about 100 migrants who had been staying in tents outside a nearby CPD station as the weather turned colder.
Rev Kathy Nolte at the time said that "More churches need to be opening up their basements to figure out what we're going to do."
Others answered the call, including Calvary Memorial Church.
"The meals, and financial help, and job hunting, and these sorts of things were already in place on smaller scale for us," he told CBS 2.
The church is hosting 22 people. Other churches are doing the same.
Manfred Karolyi is the pastor of care and mission initiatives at Calvary Memorial.
"I think just it's an example that when the church decides to work together, so many things can be accomplished," he told CBS 2.
"Other communities that have maybe been overlooked over the years too - what would it be if our churches, all of us, just come together and start tackling those issues?”
As more churches in Chicago and the suburbs come to the aid of migrants, it takes some of the pressure off of the city.
