Mother says daughter, 10, took gun from lockbox and brought it to Richton Park school

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The mother of a 10-year-old girl, who brought a loaded gun to Neil Armstrong Elementary School in Richton Park on Wednesday, said her daughter is suffering from mental issues.

The girl managed to get her mother’s gun from a lock box, brought it to school and pulled it out in a classroom.

Her mother, a corrections officer, spoke to CBS 2 she’s been trying to get help for her daughter, but there are waiting lists. She said the girl has been hearing voices.

“And she said it whispered in her ear, ‘Shoot up the school,’ and that’s when she went and found my gun,” the mother told the station.

This student spoke to CBS 2 with permission from her mother.

“She started to pull her gun out, and then everybody started screaming and getting out of the class,” the student said.

The teacher got the gun away from the girl, who was later taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Her mother has been charged with endangering the health and safety of a minor, which is a misdemeanor charge.
