Mother outraged with SW Side school after daughter ingested edible, knocked out for 24 hours

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A mother wants the administration of a CPS school on the Southwest Side to step up their anti-drug education after her daughter was hospitalized this week.

Donna Loman said she found her 13-year-old daughter unconscious on the floor at McKay Elementary after getting a phone call from the Chicago Lawn school Wednesday morning.

Loman believes her daughter was given an edible before she spent the whole day asleep at the hospital, telling CBS News Chicago the school has sent out three letters in the last few weeks warning about students potentially consuming cannabis.

"I was just hoping and praying that that student, that kid, was all right," said Donna Loman. "That they can look at things much different and much bigger than the picture that what they're seeing now and take things more serious and accountability."

Loman said her daughter finally woke up Thursday. The station reported the principal said McKay will provide seventh and eighth graders with lessons about drug and alcohol use.

"It happened on their watch, and they're supposed to watch these kids and make them feel safe and comfortable at school," added Loman.
