(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – An Oswego man reached speeds of 150 miles per hour trying to elude police while riding a motorcycle earlier this week, authorities said.

Vermain Schaefer, 27, is charged with one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer, a Class 4 felony, and on Tuesday was ordered held on $100,000 bond.

DuPage County prosecutors and Illinois state police say a trooper on Monday afternoon observed Schaefer traveling at a high rate of speed on I-88 at the Washington Street exit. The motorcyclist resisted efforts to have him pull over after the trooper activated their oscillating lights, officials said.

Instead, Schaefer allegedly accelerated and reached speeds of 135 miles per hour “while weaving in and out of traffic.” The trooper did not pursue the suspect, but an Illinois State Police airborne unit monitored the motorcycle, which reached speeds of up to 150 miles per hour on westbound I-88, officials said.

Schaefer exited the expressway and parked on Ramm Drive in Naperville, where he was taken into custody, prosecutors said. Schaefer did not have a valid driver’s license, officials said.

“We will not tolerate reckless driving that puts lives in jeopardy,” Troop 15 Commander Capt.
Linda Mandat said in a news release. “Troopers will utilize every tool at their disposal – including high-performance motorcycles and aircraft – to ensure those who violate the law will not be allowed to operate with impunity.”

Schaefer is next due in court June 20.
