(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 56-year-old motorist from Lake Park is alleged to have struck and killed two horses early Tuesday in Grayslake and then left the scene.

The horses were among four that had escaped from an enclosure. Two were found dead on West Casey Road at about 1:30 a.m., the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Sheriff’s deputies determined by debris left in the road that a Nissan pickup truck was involved in the collision.

A short time later, a Park City police officer saw a man removing items from a heavily damaged Nissan Frontier.

Officials said “further investigation revealed that the man was the driver of the vehicle that struck the horses.”

The driver, Nabor Carillo, had been injured and was taken to a hospital, officials said. He’s charged with driving on a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident.
