(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Midlothian man faces charges of possessing drugs and a stolen vehicle as well as fleeing police after he was arrested Wednesday in the western suburbs.

DuPage County prosecutors said Gonzalo Guerrero sped through a residential neighborhood around 1:30 p.m. when an Elmhurst police officer recognized the 2020 Nissan Sentra he was driving as one that was reported taken in a carjacking in Chicago the day before.

The 29-year-old took off when the officer tried to pull him over and eventually crashed into another car on Spring Road, a news release said. The crash was so forceful the officer had to break a window to get Guerrero out.

The officer found a baggie of cocaine in the car, prosecutors allege.

Guerrero was treated and released from the hospital. A judge set his bond at $1 million.

“The lawlessness and complete disregard for the safety of the general public allegedly displayed by Mr. Guerrero as he led an officer on a high-speed chase in the middle of the afternoon through a residential neighborhood in a stolen motor vehicle will not be tolerated,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said.
