CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A fight broke out Saturday afternoon at a busy South Side cemetery with a history of problems.

Two guards working at Mount Hope Cemetery were punched by mourners from a funeral that was concluding.

CBS 2 Chicago reported the Cook County Sheriff's Office said security got involved at around 2:20 p.m. after a woman told them a man had battered her.

While trying to close the gate at the cemetery at 115th Street and Fairfield Avenue, police said multiple people from the funeral punched the guard and another who intervened. Mount Hope is in Unincorporated Cook County.

Matt O'Shea, alderman for the 19th ward, has proposed it be annexed so Chicago police could have jurisdiction and run traffic management at the site, which he said is the busiest cemetery in the state.

O'Shea said the cemetery has had many problems over the years with gang fights and road rage.
