(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The 23-year-old suspect wanted in connection with eight killings in southwest suburban Joliet has died after a confrontation with authorities in Texas, police said late Monday.
Joliet police said they learned around 8:30 p.m. that Romeo Nance -- the at-large suspect they had identified in the homicides -- is believed to have taken his own life with a handgun following a confrontation with law enforcement officials. U.S. marshals had located Nance near Natalia, Texas, officials said.
The news capped a grim day in which Joliet police revealed seven people had been found dead inside two Joliet homes on Monday on West Acres Road between Springfield Avenue and Madison Street on the city's west side.
"I've been a policeman 29 years. This is probably the worst crime scene I've every been associated with," Police Chief Williams Evans told reporters at a news conference.
Police had said Nance should be considered armed and dangerous, and the car he was believed to have been driving was linked to a shooting Sunday at the Pheasant Run apartments in Joliet. In that incident, a 28-year-old man was fatally shot and a 42-year-old man was shot in the leg, authorities said.
Police said Nance knew the victims but did not elaborate.
