(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Grade school students in the Rogers Park neighborhood marked Earth Day on Thursday by making 100 envelopes full of seeds that were distributed at local businesses.

The students stuffed colorful flowering plant seeds into envelopes made of recycled materials.

Nine businesses participated in the seed giveaway.

Carolina Juarez of the Rogers Park Business Alliance said the exercise was both a celebration of Earth Day and also of the emergence from the pandemic.

"What better way to do it than with color and to get people involved with the community and the environment," Juarez said.

Participating businesses have been painted in colorful murals depicting birds and butterflies. Local artist Natalia Virafuentes said people appreciated the splash of color in the neighborhood.

"While I was painting, a lot of people from the neighborhood came up to me and said 'Thank you, thank you very much,’” she said.

The murals will remain for the next month.
