(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Like a poorly knit winter beanie, an advertisement for a holiday craft fair in Naperville has unraveled.

Police in the western suburb said the online invitation to artisans — encouraging them to register and pay $40 per day to rent space — is a scam.

What was billed as a holiday craft fair at Knoch Park later this month and in early December is a “fictitious” event, authorities said.

“The Naperville Park District has informed police that there is no such craft fair taking place at that location during the stated time,” police said in a news release.

Police said they’re investigating the origin of the ad. Anyone who has paid registration fees or know anything about the fraud are asked to call the department at (630) 420-6665.

“Vendors are encouraged to always be wary of scams and independently confirm event information prior to making payment,” police said.
