CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO ) — Chicagoans know the weather is getting cold, and applications are now open for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
“We want to make sure that we’re taking care of our elderly, our disabled customers and, of course, those that have young children at home,” said Allison Gregoire, a NICOR spokesperson.
LIHEAP provides financial assistance to help residents pay their past due energy bills — with no requirement for the aid to be paid back. Gregoire said qualified residential customers include those who are over the age of 60, are disabled or have children under the age of 6.
“LIHEAP is actually a federally funded program that you can use for any of your utility bills from any of your providers, including from NICOR gas during the winter heating season,” Gregoire said.
Enrollment for customers who have already had their service disconnected or are in imminent threat of disconnection will begin on Nov. 1.
Open LIHEAP enrollment for all residential customers will begin on Dec. 1.
