People living near Wrigley Field are in line for some new neighbors, thanks to a new apartment building that's just started accepting its first tenants.

Cubs fans have been walking by Lakeview Lutheran Church for decades, on  Addison Street across from the 19th District police station.

But they might not recognize it on their next walk through the neighborhood: it's become Lakeview Landing.

The six-story building at 835 W. Addison will be the church's new home, as well as 37 fully-accessible, fully affordable apartments for people living with disabilities and two supportive housing units.

"Everyone deserves safe, accessible, beautiful places to live," said Lakeview Lutheran pastor Liala Beukema. "We hope what happens here can be replicated again and again and again and again!"

For local alderman Bennett Lawson, the push was personal.

"I grew up with two cousins on four wheels," said Lawson (44th Ward) at this month's ribbon-cutting. "I remember when the (Americans with Disabilities Act) passed and the challenges they had."

Chicago Housing Commissioner Lisette Castaneda says it happened in part with a nearly $6 million boost from the city, as well as contributions from the state.

"It's vital -- vital! -- that we walk side by side with organizations that share our commitment to providing quality affordable housing," said Castaneda.
