(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Brookfield Zoo is buzzing with excitement over a new edition.
Two hives of honeybees have found a new home after being locally rescued by the Illinois Bee Rescue.
Jennifer Baader, senior VP of government affairs at Brookfield Zoo, said the honey bees are active in the winter and it's something that can be enjoyed indoors.
“When our Hamill Family Play Zoo is our indoor children's museum within the zoo. So it caters to the very youngest learners,” Badder said.
The exhibit includes a play area to pretend to be a bee and unique hives that have access to the outdoors.
“It's five vertical frames. So it'll stretch from the eyes of our shortest visitors all the way to our tall adults.”
Brookfield Zoo says it hopes to create empathy with a creature people can find in their own backyard, and inspire them to make good choices when it comes to keeping bees in the ecosystem.
