New Chicago task force aims to stem violence against Black women

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Several Chicago-based organizations are partnering with South Side Ald. Stephanie Coleman (16th) to address the disproportionate rate at which Black women have become victims of crimes in Chicago.

Coleman said she was shocked to learn recently of the alarming rate of violence against Black women in Chicago. To address this, Coleman announced that she’s starting a task force, which will add to the gender-based task force the city already has.

“And to say the least, beefing it up,” she said. “We also found that there are not Black women represented amongst that task force, so we are going to address that issue — because who better to advocate for policy for Black women other than Black women?”

The task force will work with Chicago police to better investigate crimes, she said, while also stopping similar crimes from happening to other Black women through education, awareness, and self-defense training.

The goal, she added, is to “prepare good policy” for “changing these statistics.”

“So we are not 25% of violent crimes that happen here in Chicago, that Black women will not be victims and that no other women will be victims,” Coleman said.
