CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The City of Chicago shared new details on the death of Jean Carlos Martinez, a 5-year-old boy who died Sunday while staying at a migrant shelter in Pilsen.
Chicago officials said the boy and his family arrived at the City's landing zone on Nov. 30th and checked into the shelter, located at Cermak Road and Halsted Street, on the same day.
Records from the shelter showed that the family left the site for part of the day on Sunday, and staff saw a medical emergency about 13 minutes after they returned.
Staff immediately called 911, according to a release from the City, after which they gave first aid and performed chest compressions on the child.
Shortly after, Chicago firefighters and paramedics arrived and took the boy to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The City added that the boy's death was not related to the three children from the same shelter who were taken to hospitals on Monday — and the boy did appear to have died from an infectious disease.
His cause of death is still under investigation.
On Monday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson unloaded on Texas Gov. Greg Abbot and some of the bus companies that have been transporting migrants from the U.S. southern border. Johnson said many of those who arrived in Chicago are arriving sick, and he claimed that transportation companies are dropping migrants off outside of city limits in an effort to skirt new requirements in Chicago.
"They're just dropping off people anywhere," he said at an unrelated appearance. "Do you understand how raggedy and how evil that is?"
The Johnson Administration has offered its condolences to Jean Carlos' family.
