(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- In an effort to put less carbon into the atmosphere, the federal government has selected a Midwest alliance to develop a clean hydrogen hub.

The Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to kickstart the production, storage and end-use of clean hydrogen.

The federal government said the aim is to use hydrogen in steel and glass production, power generation, heavy-duty transportation and sustainable aviation fuel.

It’s estimated that the decarbonization of those industries will be the equivalent of removing emissions from more than 867,000 gasoline-powered vehicles a year, improving air quality, and public health.

MachH2 anticipates generating 12,000 construction jobs and 1,500 permanent jobs.
