CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - As Chicago swears in its 57th mayor, it also receives a new top cop.

Brandon Johnson selected Fred Waller to serve as interim superintendent of the Chicago Police Department.

“I've been committed to finding someone to lead the Chicago Police Department who was caring, collaborative, compassionate and competent,” said Johnson earlier this month. “Chief Waller has dedicated his career to serving the people of the City of Chicago at virtually every level of the department. From patrol officer to third in command, he has the experience and integrity to lead the Chicago Police Department during this pivotal time.”

Waller is coming out of retirement to take the job after serving the department for 34 years.

He said he’s focused on protecting the people of Chicago while rebuilding the relationships between CPD and the communities it serves.

"I am ready to lead our city in this crucial moment with the understanding that this is essential, and we will engage with those most impacted by violence [and] crime to identify concerns and needs of our city,” Waller said.

Waller replaces Eric Carter, who was filling in after former Police Superintendent David Brown resigned.

He said being superintendent is the only title that would bring him out of retirement but stressed doesn't want the job permanently.
