(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A new Illinois law seeks to hold "doxxers" accountable, despite free-speech objections from some.

The measure fills what Gov. JB Pritzker says is "a significant gap in Illinois law."

Under it, anyone in Illinois liable in civil court if they engage in doxxing, or publicly sharing personally identifiable information with the intent to harm.

The law also allows victims to sue their attackers.

The American Civil Liberties Union has expressed concerns, saying the law could be too broad and infringe on free-speech rights.

The law is effective on Jan. 1.
