CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There was an inauguration ceremony Tuesday on the south side for the 66 newly-elected members of the Police District Councils- ushering in a new era of police oversight.

Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, a sponsor of the ordinance creating the district councils, addressed the group at the Harold Washington Cultural Center and long-time activist Frank Chapman sat in the audience.

It was acknowledged that Chapman fought for community oversight of the police for decades.

Mayor-Elect Brandon Johnson said the creation of police district councils moves Chicago towards 'a more just, equitable society.”

"Now we have a governing body that speaks to the very best of our values," he added.
