(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A new study suggests tens of thousands of motorists are wrongly issued parking tickets each year in the city of Chicago.

University of Illinois-Chicago researchers looked at more than 3.5 million parking tickets from over a six year period and found that one in every eight was erroneously issued, because specified conditions such as time, weather or location restrictions did not apply.

The more than 475,0000 wrongly issued tickets generated more than 27.5 million dollars for the city. More than eight million dollars in fines from those tickets remains unpaid. UIC researchers said nine of the 10 neighborhoods that had the lowest rate in challenging those kinds of tickets were majority Latino.
