
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The ribbon was cut Wednesday on a new $5 million Chicago Youth Center facility in a rehabbed former CPS school in the Calumet Heights neighborhood.
CYC Calumet Heights at 92nd and Phillips will provide full-day preschool and after school and summer programs for older kids.
"So we'll do enrichment programming for them-focus on non- cognitive skill development, creating access to pathways for young kids who don't necessarily have access to things like a maker lab or a tech hub where they can use 3d printers and they can design things and build things, take things apart, break them, you know, figure out how to put them back together," said President and CEO Kevin Cherep.
Other programs that will be available to young people are athletics, yoga and meditation, culinary classes, and horticulture.
He said demand for these services is as high as It’s ever been and supply is as low as it’s ever been. This is a $5 million dollar public-private partnership.
