'I just heard a lot of gunshots': New video shows deadly Chicago police shootout on South Side

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago police oversight agency shared new information on Wednesday about a November shooting in which one Chicago cop was wounded and other officers shot and killed a man.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability's (COPA) release came exactly one month after the shootout, which took place on South Dante Avenue near 73rd Street. Among the materials: numerous 911 calls made on the morning of Nov. 6, 2023.

"Hi, I just heard a lot of gunshots — like, 15 or 20," said one caller.

Another caller said he heard "about 40 shots."

Those calls stemmed from what Chicago police described as an investigatory stop of a man who was walking along the 7300 block of South Dante Avenue. In the newly released body camera footage, the man was shown running from a group of officers and then opening fire as one of the officers tried to restrain him.

The video, embedded below, shows one of the officers bleeding after he was struck by the gunfire. A sergeant on the scene, as well as two other officers, are then shown returning fire and fatally shooting the man.

Warning: The video contains graphic violence and language.

The officer was taken to the hospital in good condition. A gun was recovered at the scene.

The man was identified as 32-year-old Tranza Campbell.

It's still unclear why Campbell was stopped in the first place. COPA said investigations are ongoing.

All of the materials COPA made available to the public, including police reports, body camera footage, surveillance footage and 911 calls, can be found here.
