(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – He may be new on the job, but Chicago White Sox Manager Pedro Grifol on Friday won over some surprised fans on the South Side.

Those who stopped by the Vienna Beef Factory Store for a bite to eat got more than they bargained for.

The announcement came that “Lunch is on Pedro!”

“It was really fun in there,” Grifol told reporters after meeting locals. “Seeing all these passionate Chicago fans, it was great.”

Earnest was one of several customers to get a free lunch and a handshake with Grifol, even though he was donning a Toronto Blue Jays cap.

“It went with my outfit,” he said. “It was all about the blue today, but I switched to that Sox hat real fast.”

Along with picking up the tab, Grifol and his family passed out White Sox hats.

Calling the last 48 hours a whirlwind, the new Sox skipper said he’s trying to soak it all in.

“I’ve been at this for a really long time. Finally, the good Lord gave me the opportunity to do this here with a really good ballclub, good fans, good tradition. I’m really excited, ready to go.”
